Overview The printable card decks listed below are designed to be used for a variety of ESL speaking games and other hands-on learning activities. While the majority of the card decks shown below are intended for playing Deduction Card Games, there are card decks for other types of activities provided as well. These include hands-on phonics learning & speaking games, phonemic awareness development activities, and supporting card decks for Role-Play Speaking Activities and Survey-Taking Tasks. |

Methodological Background Most of the ESL Card Games listed below are examples of information-gap activities. and reasoning-gap activities. Information-gap and reasoning-gap activities are a type of classroom communication practice exercise in both communicative language teaching (CLT) and task-based language teaching (TBLT). These activities allow teachers and students to complete a task that can only be successfully completed through authentic verbal communication. The card decks for other types of activities are shown below, are primarily designed to support engagement boosting hands-on and play-based classroom learning experiences. |

Printing & Game Play Instructions
Playing-Card Sized Printables
About the size of a traditional playing card, these game cards print 9 to a sheet and therefore usually come in sets of 9, 18, or 27 cards. Most of card decks in this card format are have a portrait orientation, but a few are laid out in a landscape orientation. Some of the following sets of cards are designed to be used for several different games (all of which provide practice for different topics), which will maximize the utility of the time spent printing and preparing those sets of game cards.

Often used to depict an entire scene, these game cards print 4 or 8 to a sheet and therefore usually come in sets of 16 or 24. Like the playing cards, some sets of landscape cards are designed to be used for several different vocabulary topics.
