About This Activity
Overview The Phonics Fish Game turns phonics learning into fun, while simultaneously allowing students to improve their memory of a variety of high-frequency vocabulary words. It's Go Fish with a special twist: each card has a phonics clue on its back that will allow students to use their phonics knowledge to make strategic guesses about their opponents' cards. For game rules and printing instructions, please read through the provided instructions. A teacher can use the provided sets of cards (see below) to create a deck of playing cards. (54 cards total minimum is recommended for a three player game deck.) |

Words to Learn While Playing
The following content is used to the play this game, regardless of the set of cards (see below) used. Students will use these words and sentence structures for routine communication while playing Phonics Fish. However, these words are best taught in context while explaining/demonstrating/playing the game.
Note: Using other words may be necessary to explain the game to students, such as words like 'say,' 'give,' and 'card.' However, for their own communication with other game participants, only the following content is required.

Card Sets
A variety of different sets of Phonics Fish cards are available. Different sets offer the opportunity for students to become knowledgable about different phonics rules. Most sets offer a mix of vowels, consonants, and consonant blends. Two of the sets are specially designed to teach students how to identify the beginning phonics sound for all words in a series of 2 or 3 words.
Sets A to K are arranged by topic so that teachers have the option to use Phonics Fish alongside units about specific learning topics.
While some sets have only one card for each beginning phonics sound, some have more than one for some of the sounds, which means that students will begin to notice the phonics similarity between different words.
Depending on the number of students who will be playing the game, in order to create a sufficiently large enough card deck, it may sometimes be necessary to print more than one copy of a particular set. (54 cards total minimum is recommended for three player per deck.)
