About This Activity Type
Overview The printable sets of Role-Play Materials shown on this page provide object-based structure for authentic verbal interactions and exchange of goods. With exception of the play money, it will be necessary to print all of these materials on printer-friendly cardstock for them to function properly. The design of the multiple-layered objects require the thickness and durability of cardstock to function as intended. |

Methodological Background Role-play activities are a type of communication practice exercise used regularly under the communicative language teaching (CLT) methodology as one of six common classroom activity types. These activities allow teachers and students to engage in a form of (primarily) verbal communication that approximates authentic real-to-life communication. Our own approach to creating these materials is to provide realistic objects for each noun likely to be used as a direct object during a role-play exercise on a specific topic. For example, if a student asks for a hamburger during a role-play exercise, there should be an object available that accurately resembles an actual hamburger. |

Some of the objects, such as the buns, are multi-layered (with up to 5 layers) and provide pockets for other objects, such as meat, sauces, and vegetables to be placed inside to construct various realistic burgers, including hamburgers, fishburgers, and chickenburgers. Similarly, the bowls are designed to be able to hold the ingredients of salads or ice-cream with fruit toppings.
Most of the objects have 2 layers, which are designed to be glued back-to-back to resemble various food ingredients. The example PDF pages above include 2-layer objects (from left-to-right) for ketchup, chilis, lettuce, tomato, ice-cream, and apple.
The content in these printables is suitable for providing role-play practice to complete English-as-a-second-language beginners, but also offer options for complexity suitable for both intermediate and advanced students, including placing more precise food orders and role-playing complicated customer service situations.
Money Printables
This kit provides a variety of printable PDFs for different denominations of play money, which will be useful in combination with the other role-play kits on this pages, as well as, role-play scenarios created by teachers, and for other learning exercises about numbers/money.
