Pet Shop Unit

Each unit in this curriculum program is divided into three sections. The content in each unit is scaffolded from section to section. To teach Unit 1, begin with the content in Section 1 and once your students reach a comfortable level of competence, you can continue through Section 2 and Section 3. Both Section 2 and Section 3 will introduce new learning content, while continuing to utilize the learning from the preceding section(s) of Unit 1.

Unit Learning Goals
The following list provides all of the suggested learning goals for the current unit. This unit's activities and provided printable materials are designed to achieve all listed goals. However, the teacher ultimately has the final decision about which goals to expect to students to achieve for the unit.

  1. Learn how to use the word ‘not’ in a sentence.

  2. Practice the words ‘sit,’ ‘stand,’ and ‘teacher” for normal classroom communication usage.
  3. Explain the use of the possessive memory words 'my,' 'our,' 'his,' 'her,' and “your.” Do not teach 'her' as a pronoun at this point. This will be taught in a later level to avoid confusion for the learners.

  4. Give examples of how to use the verb 'have.' Use the phrase “don’t have” (or "do not have" to describe things that you have and don’t have and then invite the students to create their own sentences. Make the meaning of “don’t have” clear by using ridiculous examples of things you don’t have. For example, “I don’t have a bear.”

  5. Demonstrate the activity of matching. Provide visual examples of things that do match and don’t match and then invite the students to participate in a matching activity or worksheet.

  6. Introduce the memory word “rule” by teaching a list of classroom rules.

Unit Section Learning Goals
