Pet Shop Unit

Each unit in this curriculum program is divided into three sections. The content in each unit is scaffolded from section to section. To teach Unit 1, begin with the content in Section 1 and once your students reach a comfortable level of competence, you can continue through Section 2 and Section 3. Both Section 2 and Section 3 will introduce new learning content, while continuing to utilize the learning from the preceding section(s) of Unit 1.

Unit Learning Goals
The following list provides all of the suggested learning goals for the current unit. This unit's activities and provided printable materials are designed to achieve all listed goals. However, the teacher ultimately has the final decision about which goals to expect to students to achieve for the unit.

  1. Learn how to use the word ‘not’ in a sentence.

  2. Practice the words ‘sit,’ ‘stand,’ and ‘teacher” for normal classroom communication usage.
  3. Explain the use of the possessive memory words 'my,' 'our,' 'his,' 'her,' and “your.” Do not teach 'her' as a pronoun at this point. This will be taught in a later level to avoid confusion for the learners.

  4. Give examples of how to use the verb 'have.' Use the phrase “don’t have” (or "do not have" to describe things that you have and don’t have and then invite the students to create their own sentences. Make the meaning of “don’t have” clear by using ridiculous examples of things you don’t have. For example, “I don’t have a bear.”

  5. Demonstrate the activity of matching. Provide visual examples of things that do match and don’t match and then invite the students to participate in a matching activity or worksheet.

  6. Introduce the memory word “rule” by teaching a list of classroom rules.

Phonics Learning

The activities in this section provide phonics learning and practice opportunities using the same high frequency vocabulary words students have been utilizing in communication activities and classroom communication.

Phonics Learning

If your students are not yet completely familiar with consonant letters and their sounds, we recommend that you use this unit to introduce them to the following letters.

J, R, S

The Letter Introduction, Phonics Introduction, Letter Recognition, and Phonics Matching activities listed below are all designed to teach these letters and the phonics sounds related to them. The Phonics Fish activity for this unit, however, is designed to give students a broader understanding by exposing them to knowledge about other phonics sounds used in the vocabulary words they are learning in the current unit.

Letters Introduction: Use the provided two-sided Letter Teaching Cards to introduce these letters to your students.

The front of each card shows the uppercase and lowercase characters of each letter.

The back of each card shows the sounds that each letter is commonly used to represent.

essentials-esl-program-level-unit-3-overview

For example, the letter S normally makes the beginning sound in sit, but also frequently makes a z sound at the end of words like slices and bees.

Use the front side of each card to ask your students to tell you the letter's name and then flip the card over, point at the sound icon and ask the students to show you what sound the letter makes.

For cards with more than one sound icon, you'll need to do this for each sound icon.

Visit the Download Unit Phonics Materials page to download and print all of the necessary cards.

Phonics Introduction: Use the provided two-sided phonics cards to introduce your students to this unit's phonics sounds.

The front of each card shows the symbol for the card's phonics sound.

The back of each card provides examples of four words that use the card's phonics sound.

Both beginning and ending sound cards are provided for J and S. This is because it's common for words in English to both begin and end with these sounds. However, since English words that end with a J sound usually have spellings ending with "-ge," all of the example words we've chosen end with that spelling.

Only a beginning sound card is provided for R. Students will be taught how to end words with an eror, arear, or air sound in this curriculum's Level 2.

Beginning J sound words: jar, jazz, jet, job

Ending J sound words: bridge, cage, change, fridge

Beginning R sound words: red, rib, ring, rock

Beginning S sound words: sad, sit, sock, suit

Ending S sound words: bus, dress, grass, kiss

Phonics Learning

Letter Recognition: Letter recognition practice of the letters J, R, and S. Students will practice matching the lowercase and uppercase versions of each letter to increase their quick recognition skills for each letter and also develop their understanding that the lowercase and uppercase versions of each letter are related to each other.

Although the letters being taught will be different in each unit, all iterations of the Letter Recognition activity use the same type of materials and follow the same set of instructions.

Phonics Fish: Playing Phonics Fish will encourage your students to be intentional about learning fundamental phonics knowledge while simultaneously practicing their recall of some of the core vocabulary words that they have learned recently.

This game is a modified version of the classic game Go Fish, except that the card backs of the provided printable cards have phonics clues on them.

Unlike the other phonics activities in this unit, which are focused on the letters J, R, and S, this set of Phonics Fish cards provides learning about a wider range of letters and phonics sounds in order to give students a wider exposure to the total number of letters used in English.

A new set Phonics Fish cards is provided in each unit  of level. However, the gameplay rules for Phonics Fish stay the same in every unit.

For this unit's Phonics Fish card deck, the word used are boot, dress, glove, hat, helmet, jacket, shirt, shoe, skirt, sock, tie, and vest.
