Target Students: Level 4 of this curriculum is designed for students aged 7-10 who have either already completed Level 3 or have a very high ability to communicate in English. Students must have at least basic reading skills to complete many of the communication activities in this level. This level is not recommended for students who do not have a high level of comfortable with having discussions in English, regardless of their age or how many vocabulary words they have previously memorized.
Vocabulary: This level focuses on filling-in any remaining gaps of must-have vocabulary knowledge. New words as varied as 'experiment,' 'perfect,' and 'crowd' will be learned alongside a detailed review of the words learned in the previous levels. Students will have the vocabulary depth by the end of this level to make themselves understood in most situations that a person 12 or younger would be likely to encounter.
Communication: Learners will receive practice discussing a variety of career choices and the objects, tools, and functions associated with each job. School subjects will be integrated with a review of the skills required to discuss schedules from Level 2 and Level 3. Students will learn about a variety of medical emergencies and practice making (simulated) phone calls to the police, fire department, and medical first responders. Students will also learn to talk about a number of common of business industries, including farming, professional sports, and media/entertainment. The travel role-play activity from Level 3 will be expanded on with additional destinations and excursion options.
Phonics & Reading: Level 4 provides a review of previous phonics learning and completes students' acquisition of phonics knowledge with the introduction of a few remaining consonant blends, such as 'spr,' 'scr,' 'spl,' 'squ,' and others.
Students will at a minimum have developed basic reading skills by this point in the curriculum sequence and this will be reflected with an increased level of reading components as part of speaking/listening activities.
Each unit will continue to list early reader recommendations.
