Target Students: Level 2 of this curriculum is designed for students aged 5-9 who have either already completed Level 1 and can participate effectively in each unit's core communication activity or already have a comfortable ability to form sentences in English. This level is not recommended for beginners or near beginners, regardless of how many vocabulary words they have memorized.
Vocabulary: This level expands on the very high-frequency vocabulary words prioritized in Level 1 by teaching additional everyday vocabulary. Students who complete this level will know the words for most objects, vehicles, and places they will see and interact with on a daily basis. The goal of this level is to expand students' potential to communicate in common conversation areas, such as frequent household activities, including cooking, chores and hobbies, time and days of the week, weather, and more. Students will also benefit from an initial introduction to a variety of common and interesting jobs.
Communication: Students will learn to describe their daily and weekly schedules, discuss various transportation options, communicate about their hobbies and interests, and go into additional detail about food preferences. Students will revisit the restaurant role-play scenario of Level 1 with a new type of restaurant and additional menu choices, clarify the precise details of daily schedules, and expand their communication abilities with tools such as ordinal numbers and learning how add the suffix -er to a variety of verbs to form useful nouns.
Phonics & Reading: Level 2 will expand on the focus on consonant sounds in Level 1 by ensuring that students have a strong knowledge of all vowel sounds. Students will be able to get plenty of practice encoding a variety of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with beginning and ending consonants, as well as middle vowels. Opportunities to practice their basic phonics decoding skills with the materials for some communication activities will continue.
