How To Play

Groups: This game is best played in pairs of two participants. One participant in each group will give instructions and the other will follow the instructions.

Materials:

  1. One or more Flag Cards (4 per printable page, 32 available).
  2. One full set of Flag Component (3 pages total).
  3. One full set of Flag Backgrounds (3 pages total).

Time / Game Round: 1-3 minutes

Gameplay Process:

  • The GOAL of this game is for Partner One to describe a world flag shown on a card and for Partner Two to correctly construct that flag (using scissors, glue, and the the provided multi-colored shape print-outs) based only on Partner Two's verbal instructions.

  • Partner One draws a Flag Card randomly from the provided Flag Cards. They must not show the card to Partner Two

  • Partner One tells Partner Two which color background to begin with.

To do this, the Partner One can use the sentence pattern "Please start with a _________________ background." and insert either 'blue,' 'yellow,' or 'white' into the blank in the sentence pattern.

  • Partner One tells Partner Two which shapes to use and where to place them on the the background to assemble the flag.

For example, Partner One could use the following sentences to provided instructions for re-creating the Flag of the United Arab Emirates:

Flag of the United Arab Emirates

"Please start with a white background."

"You need a wide green rectangle."

"Put the green rectangle at the top of the flag."

"You need a wide black rectangle."

"Put the black rectangle at the bottom of the flag."

"You need a tall red rectangle."

"Put the red rectangle on the left side of the flag."

"You are finished!"

  • After Partner Two has finished constructing a flag, the two partners can compare it to the flag on the Flag Card to check for accuracy.

  • This game works best if Partner One cannot see what Partner Two is doing. This will prevent Partner One from being tempted to try to help with cutting, gluing, and assembling. As well, it will prevent Partner One from adding physical gestures to his or her verbal instructions.

  • After completing a round, the two partners can switch roles and the new Partner One can draw a new Flag Card randomly from the deck.

  • One full set of Card Backgrounds and Card Components will be sufficient to constructed up to a dozen different flags.
